Director: Masumura Yasuzo

Japan| 1958. English subtitles. Colour. Anamorphic. 97 min.

Set in the Japanese Alps, this jaw-dropping film comes across as a strange hybrid of a German ‘mountain movie’ crossed with the delirious melodrama of Douglas Sirk. Decked out with a high camp aesthetic and luscious production design, The Precipice concerns two mountaineers who are in love with the same woman (played by Yamamoto Fujiko, an icon of ’50s Japanese cinema). When one of the men plunges to his death, suspicion falls on the survivor.
