Orange Love Story

Director: Tom Cowan

2004. Colour. Digital video. 83 min.

Drawing heavily on the beauty of central west New South Wales, this experimental slice-of-life drama is the brainchild of filmmaker Tom Cowan, the celebrated cinematographer of the IMAX film Antarctica. Featuring a cast of non-professionals, the film interweaves five stories about people living in the town of Orange, with single mom Jill (Kay Nankervis) and troublesome teenage daughter Bianca (Ellen Rossi) figuring most prominently. All touch on social and economic issues affecting country people and are sincerely performed by cast members whose personal stories formed the basis of the screenplay. The sheer integrity of the filmmaker’s approach and the warmth of the characters make for a revelatory drama that’s laced with moments of genuine poignancy.
