MUM & DAD

Director: Steven Sheil

UK • 2008 • COLOUR • 84 MIN

Another new Brit horror movie, Steven Sheil’s first feature might well be described as the bastard offspring of Mike Leigh and Gaspar Noe — one wag has already dubbed it The Royle Family meets The People Under the Stairs. Some suggest Mum & Dad parodies life in Thatcher’s Britain; others have drawn a parallel to recent shocking real-life events in Austria. However you see it, this is a thoroughly unpleasant viewing experience, and we mean that in the nicest possible sense. When young Polish cleaner Lena (Olga Fedori) is offered a bed for the night by amiable co-worker Birdie (Ainsley Howard), she finds herself trapped in suburban hell — literally. Anybody with a healthy contempt for traditional family values should enjoy (if that’s the appropriate word) this blacker-than-black comedy.
