MISSISSIPPI GRIND (OPENS OCT 23RD)

Director: ANNA BODEN, RYAN

108 minutes, U.S.A., 2015, Digital

This film was released on Friday 23rd October 2015 and is no longer screening.

From the writer-director duo behind Half Nelson (2006), Mississippi Grind places the fine character actor Ben Mendelsohn (Starred Up, The Place Beyond the Pines) centre stage as woebegone Gerry, whose addiction to the thrills of gambling has cost him his wife and daughter, and left him in an ever-worsening financial situation.

An encounter with charismatic fellow-gambler Curtis (Ryan Reynolds, proving once again what a talent he can be when given the right opportunity) convinces Gerry that his luck is on the turn, and the two pair up with the goal of competing in a high-stakes New Orleans card game, raising the entry fee along the way as they follow the course of the Mississippi.

Less interested in the mechanics of gambling than the character foibles of the two seemingly contrasting men, the film’s downbeat aesthetic makes for compelling viewing. Notes by Kevin Coyne.
