★★★★ The Times

By the late ‘70s Miles Davis (Don Cheadle) had become a borderline recluse, holed up in his New York apartment in a fug of drugs, memories and creative inertia. Fuelled by rumours of a session tape of new material, enterprising Rolling Stone reporter Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor) tracks him down to pen his comeback piece, initially earning a black eye for his efforts. If that wasn’t enough, Davis must also contend with greedy record executives from Columbia who will stop at little to get their hands on new material from this highly lucrative artist.

A passion project for Cheadle, who directs, co-writes, co-produces and stars, the success of Miles Ahead lies in his decision to focus on the artist’s underexplored wilderness years, with reflections and digressions forming a fractured mosaic through which we get a sense of the man as a whole.
