For more than a decade, Mike Mills has bridged the worlds of film, music video, commercials, fashion, art and design. Complementing our screening of the director’s outstanding feature debut, ‘Thumbsucker’, this programme pairs two of his lesser-known short films. The Architecture of Reassurance (1999) reveals his trademark fascination with the manufactured comforts of American suburbia. Not How, What or Why But Yes (2004), one of several documentary pieces Mills created for gallery environments, presents itself as a kind of cinematic therapy session by asking an eclectic group of interviewees to contemplate their mortality.
