LET’S TALK ABOUT THE RAIN

Director: AGNÈS JAOUI

100 minutes| France| 2008| Subtitled| Colour| 35mm

In collaboration with her acting and writing partner, Jean-Pierre Bacri, Agnès Jaoui has developed one of the most distinctive directing profiles of the last decade. This is her third film, following The Taste of Others and Look at Me, and her best yet. She plays a feminist writer turned politician, who, whilst helping her sister (Pascale Arbillot) with the effects of their late mother, agrees to participate in a documentary about her career. The filmmakers are the hapless Michel (Jean-Pierre Bacri), who is having an affair with her sister, and his talented assistant Karim (Jamel Debbouze), who is seething with justifiable racial resentment and unfulfilled potential. Elegantly performed and often very funny (particularly when an interview designed to take advantage of beautiful natural surroundings is constantly thwarted by the bleating of inquisitive sheep), the film cleverly alternates between refined digs at bourgeois angst and poignant disclosures of familial injustice.<
