LEGEND

Director: BRIAN HELGELAND

131 minutes, U.K., 2015, Digital

This film was released on Wednesday 9th September 2015 and is no longer screening.

Although almost half a century has elapsed since the arrest of the Kray Twins that brought to an end their reign over organised crime in London’s East End, their reputation has endured, making it somewhat surprising that Brian Helgeland’s Legend is only the second film recounting the brothers’ activities, following Peter Medak’s The Krays (1990). Tom Hardy gives an acting masterclass, taking on the dual roles of Ronnie and Reggie and creating characters physically and emotionally distinct from each other, though equally committed in their drive for power and influence.

While the more restrained Reggie tries to manage the psychopathic Ronnie’s mental instability and impulsive actions, he successfully woos the innocent and troubled Frances (Emily Browning, who gives the film its heart), while the long arm of the law, in the shape of ‘Nipper’ Read (Christopher Eccleston), reaches ever closer.(Notes by Kevin Coyne.)
