Le Pays des sourds

Director: Nicolas Philibert

France| 1992| 99 mins

‘I wanted to give a ‘voice,’ if I may use the term, to people whom we usually see only through the prism of their disability. I wanted to show that we can approach them in other ways.’ Nicolas Philibert enters the world of deaf-mutes and, with dignity and simplicity, shows us the strength and diversity of the community. What is the world like to the thousands of people who live in silence? Jean-Claude, Abou, Claire, Florent and the other characters were either born deaf or became deaf in the first few months of their lives. With them, we set out to discover a land where vision and touch take on increased importance.
