Kroko

Director: Sylke Enders

2004. English subtitles. Colour. 92 min.

Winner of the second prize at the 2004 German Film Awards, Sylke Enders’ imaginative and accomplished drama centres on Julia, a wayward 16-year-old who calls herself ‘Kroko’ and spends her time hanging around the back streets of Berlin, terrorising the neighbourhood and indulging in petty crime. When one of her joyriding escapades results in an accident, the young malcontent is sentenced to community service in a home for the disabled. Instead of showing some remorse, she is at ?rst aggressive and refuses to do any kind of work. But things begin to change when ‘Kroko’ comes to realise that her gang is not that exciting or supportive and the people in the home may have something more positive to offer.
