JUNO AND THE PAYCOCK

Director: Alfred Hitchcock

95 minutes| U.K.| 1930| Drama

Alfred Hitchcock’s adaptation of O’Casey’s play has many of the original Abbey Theatre cast, including the Allgood sisters, Molly and Sara. A narrator (Barry Fitzgerald) sets the Dublin scene during the War of Independence. The Boyle family (Sara as Juno Boyle) are awaiting a large inheritance and start to live as though they already have the money, with Boyle and Joxer boasting down in Maisie (Molly Allgood) Madigan’s pub. Needless to say, there is a tough price to pay. Some evidence of Hitchcock’s later style and a real sense of Molly Allgood’s stage life are in evidence in this early film.

Joseph O’Connor will introduce the film and speak briefly about the Allgood sisters and Ghost Light.
