Director: Chantal Akerman

France • 1999 • Colour • 70 min

Initially setting out to explore the captivating literary legacy of America’s Deep South, Chantal Akerman found herself preparing one film while another story was unfolding its tragedy around her. South is an ‘accidental’ documentary which skilfully covers the premeditated racial killing of James Byrd Jnr. in Jasper, Texas. In Akerman’s film we sense the essence of the Deep South as we share in the pain and disbelief of the family and friends of the murdered man.Bookings: 01 672 8861 www.jdiff.com
