IN A WORLD…

Director: LAKE BELL

93 minutes, U.S.A, 2013, Colour, D-Cinema

Carol Solomon is a vocal coach struggling to make a living in Los Angeles. Her father is Sam Sotto, the leading voice-over artist, who lends intoned gravitas to movie trailers. Despite a distinct lack of encouragement from her dad, Carol’s dream is to follow in his footsteps, and when she scores a gig voicing the preview for a ‘children’s romantic comedy’, she becomes ever more determined to fulfil that dream.

Lake Bell’s charming feature directorial debut which she also wrote and stars in, In a World… took the best screenplay award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It’s a funny, frank and boldly feminist comedy about a woman trying to make it in a man’s world, confronted by condescension, sexism and egos.

Bell is radiant at the centre of a fine ensemble cast, and In a World… heralds the arrival of a distinct and welcome new voice of U.S. cinema. (Notes by Michael Hayden.)
