IFI NATIONAL: JOURNEY TO ARAN

A highlight of our summer programme, Journey to Aran, is a remarkable programme of rarely-seen films from the IFI Irish Film Archive which will travel from the Town Hall Theatre in Galway (June 29th& 30th) to Inis Oirr (July 1st) then to Inis Mor (July 3rd) and finally to the IFI in Dublin (July 5th, 18.30).

The programme will include:

AN TOILEANACH A D’FHILL
Directed by Jim Mulkerns, this fictional account of the experiences of an Irish labourer who returns to Aran after working on a London building site features a host of Inis Mor islanders: Micheal O Conghaile, Maire de Burca, Maire Ni Dhiorain and Diarmuid O Goill. This 1970 film is presented here in a new digital restoration.

ARAN OF THE SAINTS
We are proud to present the Irish premiere of a remarkable film made by the Catholic Film Society of London on Inis Mor and Inis Oirr in 1932. The film presents the day-to-day activities of the many inhabitants of this island community: school going, church attending, fishing, farming, weaving and playing tig in the lush green fields in a richly-textured counterpoint to the elemental extremes of Flaherty’s Man of Aran (1934) .

This film is presented with a new musical score presented live by Aran Island musicians: MacDara O Conaola, Micheal O hAlmhain, Caitriona Ni Almhain and Deirdre Ni Chonghaile.

The Journey to Aran tour is supported by the Arts Council Touring and Dissemination Scheme. The presentation at IFI is in association with Keough Naughton Notre Dame Centre, Dublin.
