IFI & FIRST FORTNIGHT: SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK

Director: David O. Russell

122 minutes, U.S.A., 2012, Colour, D-Cinema

The IFI joins with First Fortnight, Ireland’s mental health arts festival, to present the highly-acclaimed Silver Linings Playbook.

Nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, it has been praised as the film that finally saw Hollywood understand mental health problems. Bradley Cooper stars as Pat, a man struggling to cope with daily life following his release from a psychiatric facility. He meets a troubled young widow, Tiffany, played by Jennifer Lawrence, and the film documents their developing relationship. Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver co-star in an incredibly moving film that sheds light on bipolar disorder.

The film will be followed by a discussion with a panel, including filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson, IFI Access Officer Raelene Casey and First Fortnight Co-Director J.P. Swaine, about how movie portrayals of mental health affect attitudes to it.
