IFI FAMILY: HOME ALONE

Director: Chris Columbus

103 minutes| U.S.| Adventure/Comedy/Family

Round off your family Christmas festivities with a New Year’s Eve screening of one of the best of the season’s films. The star vehicle for Macaulay Culkin who plays eight-year-old Kevin McAllister, accidentally left behind when his family flies off to France for Christmas, features such memorable scenes as him laying waste to the kitchen with cooking efforts, jumping up and down on his parents’ bed and, of course, wiring up the house to defy the two bumbling burglars, Harry and Marv.

The film’s writer John Hughes, who sadly died in 2009, believed in writing scripts that kids would enjoy. As he said, ‘I don’t think of kids as a lower form of the human species’, and his hilarious script, directed by Chris Columbus (who went on to direct two Harry Potter titles), achieves that rare quality of being a great film for all the family.
