IFI FAMILY: PARANORMAN

Director: Chris Butler and Sam Fell

92 minutes, U.S.A., 2012, Animation/Adventure/Comedy, PG

From the studio who gave us Coraline comes this terrific and endearing animation that blends stop-motion with CGI to beautiful effect. In a tiny New England town called Blithe Hollow lives young Norman, a bit of a loner who sees dead people, including his granny, whom he talks to regularly in the living room. His parents worry about him and then his estranged Uncle John steps in to warn him of the imminent arrival of a crowd of zombies.

It turns out Blithe Hollow is no ordinary town. Centuries ago, a young woman was tormented for being thought a witch. She left a curse on the town and Uncle John tells Norman that he’s got to lift this and protect the town from the zombies. With his new friend Neil, and a few other odd-ball characters, Norman sets about to defend Blithe Hollow and in the meantime learns a few truths about the place.
