My Father and I provides an affecting portrait of a daughter and her wastrel dad adjusting to life with each other after her mother’s death. Yu Jing (Xu) is a quietly determined young woman who knows her own mind and Yu Da (Ye Daying) is a hopeless but genuinely devoted father who keeps trying to reform himself. In a series of beautifully observed scenes that are frank, warm and funny, the two establish a relationship of equals before events conspire to separate them once more. With its solid script and superb performances, this is a small gem of intimate observation and great wisdom.
