94 minutes, U.K., 1958, 35mm

This charming comedy starring Dame Sybil Thorndike, Kathleen Harrison and Estelle Winwood also features Richard Harris in his first film role.

The women play elderly residents of the Sunshine Old Folks’ home, who, on learning that it is to close, escape, hitch a lift with the captain of a Russian trawler, refuse his offer of political asylum and end up on the Irish island of Inis Fada where they appropriate three empty cottages and establish a successful Aran jumper knitting industry.

Cyril Frankel (She Didn’t Say No) combines themes of old age and eccentricity without condescension and the result is a warm, whimsical piece of fun.
