FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL: DIARY OF A FLEETING AFFAIR

Single mother Charlotte (Sandrine Kiberlain) and married man Simon (Vincent Macaigne) are having an affair. Charlotte’s carelessness fascinates the more cautious Simon. They both agree to a relationship with no commitments but as their meetings become more frequent, Simon’s colleague warns him, ‘Liaisons like this never last long.’ Mouret treats this story of middle-aged love with charm and intelligence. Kiberlain and Macaigne are irresistible as both modern and ‘classic’ lovers. We can feel the passing of time between them in exquisitely composed long takes. Emmanuel Mouret’s delightful, subtle, and witty film follows on from last year’s Love Affair(s).
