FIRST FORTNIGHT: TARNATION

Director: Jonathan Caouette

88 minutes, U.S.A., 2003, Colour

Praised as “a film of remarkable power” by esteemed U.S. film critic Roger Ebert, Jonathan Caouette’s Tarnation is a documentary on growing up with a mother with schizophrenia and has earned huge acclaim since its release in 2003.

Culled together from 19 years of snapshots, answering machine messages, video diaries, early short films and more, this riveting one-of-a-kind documentary receives a rare Irish screening as part of First Fortnight, Ireland’s mental health arts festival, which will be followed by a post-show discussion with filmmaker Paul Duane & Mental Health Reform’s Orla Barry.
