FRANCE| 2003. ENGLISH SUBTITLES. COLOUR. DOLBY DIGITAL STEREO. 90 MINUTES.

Two actresses at the top of their game bring zestful characterisations to Pierre Jolivet’s offbeat female buddy comedy. Carole (Sandrine Kiberlain), a conscientious prosecutor, finds herself handling the case of Tina (Sylvie Testud), a street-smart girl with an insatiable taste for fancy footwear. Promptly turning Carole’s life and apartment upside down, and turning her on to the pleasures of fine shoes, Tina enlists for a spot of investigative work, and together the duo tangle with pimps, con artists, amorous coppers and the labyrinthine complexities of the French criminal justice system.
Jolivet starts off from the tried-and-tested premise of the free spirit who revolutionises the orderly existence of a more nervous soul, but soon rings some enjoyably unlikely changes on the scenario, with the legal and investigative backdrop providing a well-observed background for the smart, sympathetic interplay of the two leads. A classy supporting cast-including François Berleand as a memorably devious gambler-bolster the film’s confident, leisurely and surprisingly open-ended pleasures.
