Director: Sam Raimi

USA • 1987 • COLOUR • 85 MIN

Recently voted the forty-ninth greatest movie of all time (just above Fellini’s 81/2 and Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai) by the shemps at Empire film magazine, it’s all too easy to assimilate Sam Raimi’s sequel to the notorious Evil Dead into the great cult movie pantheon. Rumours are floating about that it’s to be remade next year… as a musical! Here’s the thing, however: twenty-one years on, Evil Dead II remains The Godfather Part II of horror sequels, a work that enriches — nay, surpasses — the original, and a movie that just gets better, and funnier, upon repeat viewings. The word masterpiece gets bandied around all too much these days: Evil Dead II is the real deal. And, if you’ve never seen it on the big screen before, well, we’re jealous.
