Elephant

Director: Gus Van Sant

USA| 2003| Drama| 81 mins

An interesting companion piece to Moore’s documentary is the latest work from filmmaker Gus Van Sant, previously known for feelgood films like Finding Forrester and Good Will Hunting, In this film, he responds to the events of Columbine with a fictional account of a day in the life of an ordinary high school in Portland, Oregon. The title and influences for the film, however, can be traced back to our own recent history and a 1989 BBC drama which attempted to respond to the cycle of violence in Northern Ireland. Writer Bernard MacLaverty had referred to the Troubles as ‘the elephant in your living room’ – it was a huge issue that no one would talk about.
