An unlikely true story becomes a probing seriocomic study in tangled human relationships in this arresting U.S. indie debut from director Kyle Patrick Alvarez. It’s inspired by the real-life experiences of writer Davy Rothbart, who picked up a call in a motel room one evening and found himself having phone sex with a complete stranger – a surprise encounter which turned into a heated ongoing long-distance ‘affair’. On screen, it’s Hurt Locker co-star Brian Geraghty with one hand on the receiver as the film achieves a delicate balance between the farcical potential of the situation and what it says about men who’re more comfortable keeping their sexuality somewhat segregated from their emotions. Geraghty’s Davy finds it rather more testing managing his attraction to the seductively available Samantha (Marguerite Moreau), but when he tries to take matters further with the mystery caller, things get . . . curiouser and curiouser. Geraghty’s performance proves the making of this keenly-observed study of masculinity’s sensitive underbelly. (Notes by Trevor Johnston).
