Kathi (Stephanie Stremler), single mother to a young son, still has dreams of being an actress. Her lack of success has left her financially dependent on psychotherapist mother Chris (Susanne Lothar, Funny Games, in her final role before her untimely death), who has become somewhat controlling as a result.

When Kathi’s estranged father reappears, seeking to mend relationships, the simmering tensions between the two women rise to the surface as she strives to assert herself and claim some independence for her and her son.

Largely improvised, the film creates a credible portrait of a young woman trying to define herself in the midst of uncertainty.

This is screening as part of IFI Kinofest, a celebration of German cinema presented in partnership with Goethe-Institut Irland, October 10th – 13th.
