Dead, The + Usher’s Island

Director: John Huston

USA/UK/GER| 1987| Drama| 83 mins

James Joyce’s classic short story set on Twelfth Night in Dublin, 1904, is magnificently adapted for the screen by John Huston. Among the dinner guests at the home of the Misses Morkan are Gabriel Conroy (Donal McCann), the sisters’ nephew, and his wife Gretta (Anjelica Huston). After dinner, a guest recites a translation of an old Irish poem that disturbs the whole group. Another sings ‘The Lass of Aughrim’. Gretta later confesses to her husband that the song reminded her of a young man whom she loved years ago. As the night closes in, Gabriel begins to realise the truth of his marriage.
