DARKLIGHT: ANIMATION ART WANDERING

Director: MAEVE CONNOLLY

This programme, curated by Maeve Connolly, explores the growing significance of animation techniques in art and other media. Stop motion features prominently, most notably in a series of works exploring urban and rural landscapes. These include Donna Conlon’s Espectros Urbanos / Urban Phantoms(2004), Mohamadou Ndoye’s Train Train Medina(2001) and Adrift(Inger Lise Hansen, 2003). Several works are also linked by a satirical approach, a well established tradition in animation. Martin Sastre’s Iberoamerican Trilogyoffers a comic critique of art-world power structures, while The Manipulators(Andrew Jeffrey Wright and Claire E. Rojas, 2000) focuses on fashion and advertising. The programme also features Who I Am and What I Wantby David Shrigley and Chris Shepherd, a new work in the Animate! series. In parallel with the screenings, Darklight will host a public discussion on the role of commissioning in this area of work.
