DANIEL LANOIS: HERE IS WHAT IS

Director: ADAM VOLLICK, DANIEL LANOIS, & ADAM SAMUELS

CANADA 2007.COLOUR. DIGITAL VIDEO. 90 MIN.

WE’RE PLEASED TO PRESENT THE IRISH PREMIERE OF THE RICH SONIC DOCUMENTARY HERE IS WHAT IS. THE EVENING SCREENING WILL FEATURE A LIVE PERFORMANCE BY DANIEL LANOIS AND HIS LONG-TIME BAND MEMBER BRIAN BLADE

The creative act is more often than not elusive and indefinable. The created object exists, but the process of arriving at this destination is different for everyone. Quebec-born artist Daniel Lanois has turned his considerable talents toward unearthing the source of creativity. Musicians such as Bob Dylan, U2, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel and Robbie Robertson have turned to Lanois, time and again, for guidance as they shaped their creations.

Shot over an entire year, the film sets out to capture moments where improvisation leads towards that sense of the creative act, be it in his recording studio with Garth Hudson and Brian Blade hunched behind piano and drums, or quizzing Brian Eno in Morocco, or in the congregation of a Zion Baptist Church in Shreveport.

The charm of Here Is What Is lies not just in the freewheeling, relaxed sense of well-being that Lanois brings to everything he does, but also in the playful experimentation that cinematographer Adam Vollick’s visuals add to the film.

Daniel Lanois and Brian Blade will play live for around 50 minutes at the 9.15 p.m. screening. Admission €35.
