Cyrano de Bergerac

Rappeneau’s version of Rostand’s theatrical warhorse never puts a foot wrong. Much of the credit goes to Depardieu, perfect as the 17th century Gascon swordsman and braggert whose unsightly nose prevents him from confessing his love for his cousin Roxane.
Rappeneau and screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere have reworked Rostand’s famous Alexandrine rhyming couplets as film dialogue while Anthony Burgess provides the English subtitles. A modern masterpiece, Cyrano de Bergerac attains a near-perfect balance of verbal and visual flamboyance.
