Ben (Jeremy Irvine) is an impoverished hunting guide, hiring himself out to gunmen seeking excitement in the Mojave Desert, a territory he knows well. Having grown up in a small town, the draw to escape it intensifies after his girlfriend (Hannah Mangan Lawrence) leaves to better herself at college. Then Madec (Michael Douglas) comes into Ben’s life, rolling up in his custom built SUV and brandishing a rare Austrian rifle that’s more like a rocket launcher.

Madec is a corporate shark with money to burn and little regard for the bureaucracy or hunting permits. When bad things happen on their trip in the wilderness, a dangerous cat and mouse game develops.Based on Robb White’s novel Deathwatch, Beyond the Reach is a gripping, pared-down thriller packed with surprises and delights, with Douglas on delicious form, clearly relishing his unhinged alpha male turn.(Notes by Michael Hayden)
