BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD

Director: Benh Zeitlin

93 min

This multi-Academy-Award®-nominated tale follows six-year-old Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis, 2013 Best Actress nominee) who lives in the Bathtub, a fictitious area outside New Orleans. Below the levee line, the residents live what appears to be a chaotic, ramshackle existence in which community spirit and acceptance of difference are important. As natural disaster may occur at any time, children are prepared for an uncertain future where they must be resilient and self-reliant. With themes of active citizenship, belonging, community and human dignity, this film is a great resource for CSPE classes.
