BARBARA

Director: Christian Petzold

105 min

A deserved winner of the Berlinale Silver Bear by one of  Germany’s finest contemporary directors, this tense drama recalls the political and human dramas of 1980s’ divided Germany. Nina Hoss is the doctor, Barbara, transferred from a top job in Berlin to a position in an isolated country hospital as a consequence of applying to move West. She plans her escape to join her boyfriend but this is complicated by her growing sense of duty towards her patients and her qualms about abandoning them to the cruelty of the Stasi regime.
