Yasujiro Ozu’s plaintive final film concerns widower Shuhei Hirayama (Ozu regular Chishu Ryu) as he comes to terms with changing times. He has been living happily for years, cared for by his unmarried daughter Michiko (Shima Iwashita), but as both are getting older, he is persuaded by various acquaintances to find Michiko a husband, so that she is not left alone when he passes.

Hirayama reluctantly encourages Michiko’s departure, ever anxious about what this will mean for himself. Ozu is the master of probing issues of family, and frequently examined themes of loneliness, dependence, marriage, and, crucially, of parents and their children. An Autumn Afternoon ranks as one of his greatest works, characteristic of his films in its subject matter, the pared down dramatic style and the director’s profound insight into the human condition.
