AFTER SPRING

Director: STEPH CHING/ ELLEN MARTINEZ

USA | 2016 | 101 MINS | DIGITAL | SUBTITLED

This film screened 12th November 2016.

This film will be pre-ceded with the European premiere of new short by director Jim Sheridan 11th Hour. Starring the Mexican-American actor Salma Hayek, this eight minute short is set in a New York bar on the day of the 9/11 attacks. The script, by Jim Sheridan and Oskar Slingerland, is based on Irish journalist Lise Hand’s own experience of being in Manhattan on September 11th, 2001.

The Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan was set up in 2012, one year after Syria broke out in violent evolution, and is now the largest Syrian refugee camp in the world with 80,000 inhabitants, over half of which are children. It is a virtual city with thriving markets and restaurants – even boasting its own twitter feed.

With an approach that is more humanist than political, co-directors Steph Ching and Ellen Martinez emphasise the daily routines of those living in the camp in a documentary that puts a face to a tragedy too immense to comprehend, proving that even in the direst of circumstances life must go on.

This screening is part of the Dublin Arabic Film Festival 2016.
