Abel

Director: Diego Luna

Mexico • 2010 • 82 mins • Drama • English subtitles

Actor Diego Luna’s (Rudi y Cursi) accomplished debut feature is an unusual tale of family dynamics and patriarchy. Abel is a troubled nine-year-old boy who has suffered a breakdown and retreated into silence, apparently as a result of his father abandoning the family. When his mother Cecilia brings him home from the psychiatric ward, Abel begins inhabiting the persona of the absentee dad. The family plays along and bizarrely the charade works; Abel’s fear about his family is transformed and their desire for a father figure is satisfied. Luna expertly handles the subject matter and the result makes for an intriguing and humorous family drama.
