YOUTH

PAOLO SORRENTINO

Book Tickets

Retired composer Fred Ballinger (Michael Caine) is in retreat from the world at a luxurious Swiss sanatorium, fending off requests to return to London for a Royal Command performance of his early masterpiece, Simple Songs. Ballinger may be in Switzerland for a health-check, but as he wryly comments, “at my age, getting in shape is a waste of time.” Thankfully his daughter (Rachel Weisz) and old friend Mick (Harvey Keitel), a film director working on his swansong, are at hand to distract him from his melancholy ruminations on lost loves and

mistakes made.

Youth has all of the visual flair and invention we have come to expect from director Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty) – the vibrancy of his camera work and composition remains a joy to experience – but it is the subtlety of the performances and poignant, elegiac tone that will linger in the memory.
