The dysfunctional family life of surrealist artist Zdzisław Beksiński (1929-2005), whose work is sometimes compared to that of H.R. Giger, is vividly depicted in Jan P. Matuszyński’s meticulously researched debut feature.

Taking place over 28 years, the film centres on the relationships between Beksiński (Andrzej Seweryn), wife Zofia (Aleksandra Konieczna), and permanently agitated son Tomek (Dawid Ogrodnik), himself something of a cult hero due to his work as film translator and DJ, and pays no attention to political changes occurring during this period. The excellence of the three leads ensures that a film of seemingly narrow scope is instead deeply affecting.

Screening as part of IFI & Kinopolis Polish Film Festival. For more details see the festival homepage.
