WILD STRAWBERRIES: THE WELL-DIGGER’S DAUGHTER

Director: Daniel Auteil

109 minutes, France, 2011, English subtitles

Wild Strawberries is our bimonthly film club for the over 55s.

Fans of the much-loved French films Jean de Florette and Manon des sources will welcome this new adaptation of a Marcel Pagnol novel and the directorial debut of Daniel Auteil who also stars.

In this gorgeous-looking film set during the Second World War, he plays Pascal, a digger of wells and widower who is bringing up his daughters alone. An older man is courting the beautiful 18-year-old Patricia but she gets willingly distracted by the handsome young Nicolas whose parents (recent IFI French Film Festival guest Jean-Pierre Darroussin plays the father) try to atone for their son’s wayward behaviour. The ever-watchable Auteil struggles to defend his daughter’s honour while at the same time his own sense of dignity in this thoroughly enjoyable film.

€3.85 including regular tea/coffee before the screening. Please see our other screenings to mark Francophonie 2012.
