A social gathering to celebrate the promotion of Janet (Kristin Scott Thomas) to the role of shadow health secretary quickly descends into farce in Sally Potter’s deliciously tart black comedy of manners. As her husband (Timothy Spall) sits catatonic in the living room, a rogues’ gallery of guests begin to arrive, including acid-tongued best-friend (Patricia Clarkson) and her life-coach boyfriend (Bruno Ganz), a frenetic, coked-up venture capitalist (Cillian Murphy), and an earnest lesbian couple (Emily Mortimer and Cherry Jones) who are hoping to share some good news with their friends. The conversation soon becomes awkward and relations turn sour as alcohol-fuelled revelations come thick and fast.

Presented in gleaming black and white over a brisk running time, The Party keeps the tension high and the one-liners flowing as the ensemble becomes increasingly unhinged.
