THE NEW GIRLFRIEND

Director: FRANÇOIS OZON

107 minutes, France, 2014, Subtitled, Colour, D-Cinema

This film was released on Friday 22nd  May 2015 and is no longer screening.

Claire and Laura have been best friends since childhood, and are closer than sisters. When Laura falls ill and dies soon after she has given birth, Claire is tentative about seeing Laura’s husband, David, who she feels will need time to grieve and bond with his new child, and, well, she was never very close to him, anyway. When Claire eventually does reach out, she discovers David has a secret…and it is one that will transform their relationship and change their lives forever.

The latest film from François Ozon is a delightful tease, a thoroughly modern melodrama that, as with some of the director’s other work (8 Women or Potiche, for example), celebrates femininity with wit and wonder. Anaïs Demoustier cements her reputation as a rising star of French cinema, though no one could detract from Romain Duris’ outstanding star turn, in a role that has to be seen to be believed. (Notes by Michael Hayden.)
