THE CRITICAL TAKE (NOV 2012)

This month, The Critical Take (the IFI’s FREE monthly film club) will discuss new films from three of the most highly regarded directors working today: Jacques Audiard, Paul Thomas Anderson and Michael Haneke.

Audiards’s Rust and Bone (screening November 2nd – 22nd) tells an unusual love story between a struggling single father and a killer whale trainer who is left in a wheelchair following a freak accident. It stars Academy-Award-winning actress Marion Cotillard. Winner of the 2012 Cannes Palme d’Or, Michael Haneke’s Amour (Love) is an affecting study of devotion and despair and it opens the IFI French Film Festival on November 14th. Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master follows a traumatised Naval veteran (Joaquin Phoenix) who encounters the charismatic leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman) of ‘The Cause’. Amour and The Master open on November 16th.

Our panellists will be John Kelleher, former Director of Film Classification; Manus McManus, Senior Collections Officer at the IFI; and Eileen Culloty, a PhD student in film studies at Dublin City University.
