SALMA (DUBLIN PREMIERE)

Director: KIM LONGINOTTO

90 minutes. UK/India. 2013. Colour. D-cinema

Throughout her extraordinary career, Kim Longinotto has given a voice to strong female characters and Salma is no different.

Respected Tamil poet Salma returns to her village where as a child, she was locked up by her parents and given up to an arranged marriage. Her poetry was her salvation and a means to challenge the oppressive customs of her home. Despite this exceptional resilience and courage, it’s clear that old traditions change very slowly.

Salma is a story of rare achievement – a Muslim woman who writes her escape out of family servitude in southern India. The documentary, telling her own story in her own voice in her own village, is as poignant as it is simple.” Screen
