Director: Pete Doctor and Bob Peterson

96 minutes, U.S.A., 2009, Animation/Family/Adventure

To mark the European year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, our IFI Family screening for this month is this wonderful animation from the studio that brought us Toy Story, Wall-E and more.

This is the story of an inter-generational friendship between 78-year-old Carl who sets out to fulfil a lifelong dream and a promise he made years ago to wife Ellie to see South America, by tying thousands of balloons to his house. Unbeknownst to him, young Russell, aged 8, is a keen Scout explorer who is very anxious to get his ‘Assisting the Elderly’ badge and manages to stow away on board Carl’s air-bound home.

Together they encounter talking dogs, an evil villain and a rare bird called Kevin. Poignant and gently humorous, this animation poses big life questions in a delightful and up-lifting way.
