Aaron (George MacKay) is the only survivor of an unexplained fishing accident that claimed the lives of five men, one of them his older brother. He becomes an outcast in the remote Aberdeenshire village where he lives, with many locals suspecting that Aaron is somehow to blame for the tragedy. Even his mother (Kate Dickie) has difficulty communicating affection for her surviving son, when she has lost another. Aaron gets some sympathy from his late brother’s fiancée (Kate Burley), but is increasingly distracted by the myths and folklore prevalent within the community, and is inspired by them to somehow believe his brother might still be alive.

Beautiful performances from a strong cast of emerging actors meld with the striking Scottish seascapes and inventively present archive footage in Paul Wright’s assured and moving debut feature, which deals with issues of grief and loss with an honest compassion. (Notes by Michael Hayden.)
