FEAST YOUR EYES: THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE AND HER LOVER

Director: PETER GREENAWAY

124 minutes, U.S.A., 1990, Colour

Dr. Peter Cherry, Assistant Professor in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at Trinity College, Dublin, will introduce this screening.

Brutal, sumptuous and deadly, Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989), the choice for this month’s Feast Your Eyes, is set in the prestigious Le Hollondais Restaurant.

To the great dismay of head chef Richard Borst, the establishment is taken over by abhorrent gangster Albert Spica, played with relish by Michael Gambon, whose urbane wife – Helen Mirren at her most enticing – strikes up an affair with one of the restaurant’s regular patrons, an intellectual who runs the local bookshop. When Spica discovers what is going on, he is determined to seek revenge, and a number of sordid, violent acts subsequently unfold. With costumes by Jean-Paul Gaultier, music by Michael Nyman and food props created by Savoy chef Giorgio Locatelli, this is a film to savour again and again.

This screening will be followed by a meal in the IFI Café Bar where you can enjoy either Coq au Vin, Fish Pie or Spinach, Goat’s Cheese & Caramelised Onion Tartlets with a side salad.

Tickets €20 (free list suspended). Online bookings are not available for this event so please call the IFI Box Office on 01 679 3477 to reserve your seat.
