DRIVE

Director: NICOLAS WINDING REFN

95 minutes, U.S.A., 2011, Colour, D-Cinema

The first fruits of Winding Refn’s collaboration with Ryan Gosling was this effortlessly cool and casually gory LA noir. Gosling smoulders at the centre of the film as its nameless antihero, a Hollywood stuntman turned getaway driver who wants to turn his life around and go legit.

He begins to fall in love with his neighbour Irene (Carey Mulligan), a mother looking after a young kid on her own while her husband Standard (Oscar Isaac) serves time. When Standard gets out, the Driver has to decide how far he will go to help Irene. (Notes by Michael Hayden.)

Screening as part of Wanna Fight? (August 3rd – 31st), our season recognising the influences on director Nicolas Winding Refn and the roots of Only God Forigves.
