DEAD AGAIN (EVENING COURSE: SHADOW OF A GENIUS)

Director: KENNETH BRANAGH

107 minutes, U.S.A., 1991

Kenneth Branagh’s second directorial feature featured Emma Thompson as Grace, an amnesiac woman in LA who is being helped to find her past life by Branagh’s private detective, Mike Church. After Spellbound, where John Brown speaks of being haunted by something he can’t recall, Grace has nightmares of a 1940s murder.

Professor Diane Negra (UCD) will read Dead Again in relation to Hitchcock’s Rebecca, Shadow of a Doubt and Vertigo. Taking Branagh’s heroine as the starting point, she will consider how hauntings, possessions and ‘past life’ plots in romantic dramas may establish realms of female agency and knowledge.

This event is taking place as part of the IFI Evening Course, Shadow of a Genius (February 5th – March 12th). Full course price: €60 (€55 concessions), including tea/coffee. Please book your place by calling Sharon Corrigan on 01 679 5744 or emailing scorrigan@irishfilm.ie (Individual tickets for films on this Course are not available.)
